Private Pilot LicenceThe Private Pilot Licence, aeroplane category, is the first step toward becoming a professional pilot, or the final prize for a lifetime of recreational or business flying. Obtaining a Private Pilot Licence (PPL) involves flying lessons and a ground school (classroom or correspondence) course. Transport Canada sets the minimum amount of training and classroom instruction required to get a Private Pilot Licence. It is best to go directly to the source, which is the Canadian Air Regulations; CARs for short. CAR 421.26 details the minimum amount of training required. Your instructor is required to train you in accordance with a document called the Flight Instructor Guide. You will write a very simple exam called PSTAR before you may fly solo. To study for this exam you will need this guide. You will also need a Radio Telephone Licence to legally use the radio in an airplane. Here is a study guide to help you prepare for the test. You must also pass a medical exam given by a Transport Canada medical examiner. For the PPL a class IV medical is required, but if you want to become a professional pilot get a class I medical right off the bat. To find a medical examiner follow this link. You need to get your medical right away because you cannot solo until your medical is processed. You will also write an exam called PPAER before your licence is issued. Here is a sample exam to assist your studies When your training is complete you will take a flight test after which your licence will be issued by the federal government through Transport Canada. Here is the link to the flight test guide.
