Multi-engine Class Rating

To fly an airplane with more than one engine you require a multi-engine class rating.

The legal standards to obtain the multi-engine rating are in CARS 421.38(3)

What is a Type Rating?

Once you have a multi-engine rating you are not yet fully licenced to take the controls of a jet or turbo-prop. In most cases you will need a type rating. If you examine your pilot licence you will notice that you have a "blanket type rating" that allows you to fly "all single-pilot, non-high-performance aeroplanes." This means that there are two reasons why you might need a type rating. You need a type rating for:

  1. High Performance Aeroplanes
  2. Aeroplanes with a minimum crew requirement of more than one

CAR 400.01 defines a high performance aeroplane. You can also find the definition in CARs part V

Transport Canada maintains a list of every airplane type in the country that indicates if the airplane is designated as requiring two pilots. Here is the link to Aircraft Type Designators.
