Pilots and Mechanics

Three AMEs and three pilots have been sent on a trip out into the wilderness to retrieve an airplane that crashed. The pilots are murderously enraged at the mechanics, as they believe they were responsible for the crash. Therefore, the mechanics have determined that to protect themselves the pilots must never outnumber them, lest god knows what should happen.

As they trek through the wilderness they reach a wide river that must be crossed. They have only one two-person canoe. The chief AME insists on devising a plan for crossing the river so that at no time do pilots (P) outnumber AMEs (M) on either side of the river.

What is the plan?

In the diagram the Ps represent the pilots and the Ms represent the mechanics.

Draw or write out your plan to get both groups across the river without violating the rules.

What principle of CRM is at stake here?
