Ferry Pilots

You and one other pilot have been contracted to ferry four airplanes from Vancouver to Toronto. Each airplane will require the following amount of time to make the trip one way (there is no wind.)

  • Supersonic jet 2.5 hours
  • Subsonic jet 5.0 hours
  • Twin engine prop 11 hours
  • Single engine prop 20 hours
  • Both pilots are fully qualified to fly all four aircraft.
  • Each aircraft requires only one pilot - but can carry two.

The challenge:

Because there are only two of you (and you cannot hire more pilots) you will need to get back to Vancouver from Toronto; you must do this using the above aircraft.

Your challenge is to plan the most efficient ferrying of the aircraft so that you get the job done in the least total time. Last year's crew accomplished the task in 41 hours. Can you do better?

Is there a CRM principle at stake here? If so, what is it?
