By the end of the first semester here is what you will be able to do in the ALSIM:

  • Takeoff, climb, cruise, descent, missed approach - SOPs
  • Track VOR, ADF, GNSS
  • Perform very efficient TSI
  • Fly a DME arc
  • Fly a straight-in VOR approach from an arc or transition
  • Fly an RNAV SID

Don't worry about engine starts and emergencies in this semester. Concentrate on learning TSI and tracking.

Learn your SOP calls - spend as many hours as possible with a partner at the static trainer rehearsing all the SOP calls and learning your checklist flows. TIP: you don't need to know the before-start flows until lesson 5 so initially concentrate on mastering calls and flows from After Start Checklist.

Read Navigation for Professional Pilots concentrating on Drift estimation and related topics.

Read IFR for Professional Pilots with emphasis on chapters 3, 5 and 6

Extensively use 1st semester simulations shown to left.
